Seven alleged individuals of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that earned them the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honour” that draws rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the German foreign ministry merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
