Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The pace bowler has taken 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
