A recent study indicates that patients who stop using new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People using these medications should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery suggests a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a switch activating and you become starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
