Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of positions created to the market in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
