The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, challenges the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
